Understanding Sleep Through a Neurodiversity-Affirming Lens
Sleep & NeurodivergenT Children
Dr. Christopher J. Allen
Sleep Specialist & Pediatric Neurologist
You're here because nights are hard
Do nights in your home feel unpredictable, tense, or stretched far longer than they should?
Does bedtime spark anxiety, resistance, or sensory overload leaving you wondering why something so basic feels so hard?
Have you been told your child is “just overtired,” “resisting,” or that you need to be more consistent even though your instincts tell you something deeper is going on?
Have you tried routines, charts, and advice meant to help, only to feel more exhausted, discouraged, and unsure of what actually works for your child?
You’re not failing and your child isn’t broken.
What you’re seeing is a nervous system asking for safety, not stricter rules.
Hi!

Sleep Dr. and pediatric neurologist
and above everything … A FATHER
As a young child, I never understood why my friends and family members did not want to sleep in the same room as me. Being told "You snore loudly," and also being the butt of some rude jokes, it wasn't until my time in residency school when I finally discovered the truth.
A simple flyer read "Join Our Sleep Study" and this one moment changed the trajectory of my life. Having the opportunity to take a sleep test, it was then that I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Suddenly, life made more sense.
Since then, I became board-certified in pediatric neurology and earned my fellowship in sleep medicine from the University of Michigan.

This webinar recording mini course reframes sleep struggles in neurodivergent children (and families) from “behavior problems” to nervous system safety issues, and provides a science-backed, shame-free framework parents can use immediately.
Most people don't have a sleep problem…
They have a misunderstood nervous system problem.
When it comes to children’s sleep especially for neurodivergent kids parents are often told they’ll “grow out of it,” that their sleep needs are just different, or that if they’re coping during the day, there’s nothing to fix.
Many families try later bedtimes, screens to wind down, or ignore night waking, early rising, or snoring because it’s been labeled “normal.”
But sleep challenges rooted in neurodivergence don’t resolve on their own and many common strategies actually increase dysregulation.
Most children still need deep, restorative sleep to support learning, behavior, and emotional safety. When sleep is disrupted, the nervous system never fully settles and everything feels harder.
This mini course replaces myths with science and guesswork with clarity.
This mini course cuts through the confusion.
You’ll learn science-backed strategies that honor neurodivergent biology.
Simple, actionable steps that bring more rest, safety, and predictability to nights starting right away.
You’ll learn…
Why bedtime resistance, night wakings, and anxiety are often signs of a nervous system seeking safety not defiance or bad behavior.
How the neurodivergent brain processes sleep differently, including the roles of cortisol, melatonin, and sensory regulation.
Why traditional sleep advice (rigid schedules, sticker charts, “cry it out”) often backfires for neurodivergent children.
The 5 Pillars of Neuro-Affirming Sleep and how to use them to create predictability without power struggles.
How to build a sensory-smart bedtime routine that actually calms an over-aroused nervous system.
What medical red flags to watch for like mouth breathing, restless sleep, or low ferritin that signal it’s more than “just behavior.”
Practical, same-night tools for co-regulation that help children feel safe enough to downshift into sleep.
